Literary movment essay
The -isms or literary movements where important. From the inspiration they created to the aspect of genres dieing and creating another. The first -ism we did was Puritanism which was a dry and an one pointed way of writing, mostly because of religion. Because of the stereotypical writing of a Christian this infulenced people to push that and question life. Thus stated Rationalism. An -ism based on taking everything and thinking it out in a very organized way. Which got people to think more... First everyday life then they dug deeper, into the unknown. This created Romaticism which evolved in to Dark Romaticism. A genre bassed around getting to know the darkest thoughts and turning it into something calming. Haveing this new prominent genre a lot of people started questioning after life helped create the last -ism we learned. Transcendentalism, a -ism based on what if we live a more natural life. And what nature has to do with our life and after life. These -isms influence each other and our writing everyday.
Puritanism was a type of life, witting, everything. It was living a life of God and only God. A life of being extremely conservative. Especially girls, they had to wear heavy cloths to hide all skin. And the men were always dominant. This can be proven in the prose written during this literary movement. Almost all, if not all, was related to God. A big reason is they were not allowed to have any other source of entertainment. They had to live a silent, conservative life as written in this quote from The Crusible. "Their creed forbid anything resembling a theater or (vain enjoyment)". That basically leaves them with the bible as their only source or entertainment. Although you would think they would have Christmas, but they don't because that was to vain. As said in another quote from The Crusible. "They did not celebrate Christmas, and a holiday from work just meant only that they must concentrate even more on prayer."
Rationalism is the ability to take a everyday thing and turn it into a distant topic where you can separate feelings from reality. This means they lived a life of a perfectionist. They had to have everything the way they wanted it. As said in this quote from The Autobiography of Ben Framklin. Ben Franklin made his 13 virtues and said this, "my intention to acquire the habitude of all these virtues" and he goes on of how he will organize. Then how he practices these virtues to where he can " acquire the habitude" of his virtues. Because with organization comes perfection. And that's what this movement is about. How to reach a higher level in your professional life. And having the mind to be able to do this. "I determined to give a weeks strict attention to each of the virtues successively." And then said this. "Only marking every evening the faults of the day". Separating his pride from reality... Being able to perfect his 13 vitues.
Dark Romaticism, taking a bad thing and using your mind in a rational way to fall in love with something so morbid. It could also be catorgorized as Gothicism. Dark Romanticism
comes from Romaticism a less twisted version. To show how horrible, dreadful, and taunting this -ism is here a qoute from "The Raven"... "Quoth the raven, nevermore" this is an example of how Dark Romanticism is dark. This raven is mocking a man in his insanity after the death of his loved Lenore.
An important American literature movement. To go beyond common experience and understanding. Going beyond rationalism. Beyond common thoughts and beliefs. This is transdentalism... "In the woods is perpetual youth" and "In the wood you return to resins and faith" these are both from "nature". It's talks of how nature can be such a spiritual place. As if nature is a religion. Nature is a way to releif. This shows you how transcendentalism is the lightening of the way to live. A way for humans to feel more comfortable in life.
Literary movements are ever going, they will never stop. These are only some -isms, they all help each other find their potential. They influence each other. It's revolutionary. Just like anything else in the world. People learn and advance from past prose or poems. It will never stop.
